Here Come the Irish, Notre Dame campus comes alive!!

This week was the start of classes for 10,000+ undergraduate and graduate students, and it is so energizing to be a part of “it.”

I’m referring to the talent, determination, spirit and drive to be a force for good in every one of the students, and for Mendoza College of Business students to push themselves and those they touch to “Grow the Good in Business”.

I had my first classes yesterday, with 90 mostly seniors majoring in Finance. My course, Working Capital Management and ST Finance (I know it sounds exciting!), has developed quite a following over the years.

Students and businesses gain insights into how a firm’s brand embodies its value proposition (customer promise) and comes to life through relationships with its customers and suppliers via terms and conditions in its supply (or value) chain.

How do you run or work in the value chain in a way that results in win-win relationships with customers and suppliers while creating value? Plus, how to consider working capital in deals, like mergers, acquisitions and divestments.

And, for entrepreneurs, how to create and run a business in a way that optimizes working capital, thereby, reducing the amount of investment needed which requires the start-up to give away equity to investors. In summary, that is working captial and the course.

I learn so much looking at business and trends (global, sustainability, political, demographic, technology) through the lenses from this course.

Also, it is so very relevant to current times where supply chains and supplier relationships are transforming due to a number of factors.

And, I learn so much from my students. Said better, we learn together — I like the way that sounds!

Sounds more like comprehensive business versus just finance, right? It is just that — using finance as a capability, an enabler, to make business decisions and achieve.

I can’t wait to get to know the students and share the experience together this semester!
